Mulberry Community Garden is a truly communal community garden located next to the Glenroy College.A large vegetable garden with shade structures.

Everyone works together to grow and maintain a wide range of herbs, vegetables and fruits. The harvest is shared by all members, and any surplus is donated to local community organisations.

The garden was the recipient of a Council community strengthening grant which funded a 2-day workshop at the 2024 spring festival to build four large bamboo netting and shading structures over raised garden beds and the food forest to protect crops from heat and birds. Around 200 festival attendees were invited to observe and participate in the building process led by Giant Grass.

Bamboo is easy to cultivate, fast growing and renewable, making it an excellent sustainable material for garden structures. Participants learned the ancient practice of bamboo splitting into the strong, durable strips from which the structures are made.

If you have an idea for a community project apply for an annual community grant by February 28.
