We have just published drafts of our first ever Circular Economy Strategy and drafted our next Climate Emergency Action Plan to guide our actions over the next 5 years.
We are committed to urgent and holistic climate action, with no-one left behind.
Before we finalise these important documents, we’d love you to take a look and tell us what you think. You might even like to attend an in-person feedback session.
Head to the Conversations Merri-bek project pages to find out more and have your say:
Our achievements so far
Our current Zero Carbon Merri-bek (ZCM) Climate Emergency Action Plan 2020 – 2025 was adopted by Council in 2019.
It has been guiding our actions consistent with our Zero Carbon Merri-bek 2040 Framework towards our long-term goal to achieve a net zero Merri-bek by 2035.
The 5-year plan included 9 community goals and 12 Council targets for 2025. Many of these ambitious goals have been achieved, and some will be carried through to our next plan.
Read our summary of achievements since 2020.
Our next Climate Emergency Action Plan
Our action plan for 2025-2030 broadens its focus beyond achievement of ‘zero carbon’ goals for Council and our community.
It integrates refreshed goals for 2030 and priority actions to deliver on 3 key sustainability strategies:
- Zero Carbon Merri-bek 2040 Framework – urgently reducing the climate pollution that is causing global warming, with a focus on emissions from energy, transport and waste.
- Circular Economy Strategy (engaging now!) – defining our vision for a circular economy with zero waste, to help tackle the climate and environmental impacts of unsustainable design and consumption.
- Climate Risk Strategy – ensuring we prepare now for even hotter and more extreme weather to come
