Our annual environmental scholarships are designed to support and empower climate action leaders in our community to make Zero Carbon Merri-bek a reality.
We are thrilled to announce the environmental scholarship recipients for 2022.
We would also like to thank the many applicants this year and encourage each of you to continue to create positive environmental change. We hope to hear from you again next year.
Congratulations Nathacha!
Nathacha Subero has received the Merri-bek Women Environment Leadership Community Scholarship for 2022.
This scholarship is delivered by Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) as part of their work supporting women solving our environmental and climate crises.
Nathacha is passionate about facilitating spaces for people to connect with land and what it provides us with.
She has been working as a community garden coordinator at Reynard St Neighbourhood House, Coburg, and collaborating with other Merri-bek residents to make systemic changes to face climate change challenges. She hopes the scholarship will help boost her inner strengths and broaden her professional skills and capacity.
Congratulations Kim and Claire!
This year we awarded two recipients to the Merri-bek Nature-Based Leadership Community Scholarship.
This scholarship is delivered by CERES and Nature’s Apprentice and is designed to help participants develop a deeper connection with the earth and discover how they might share this knowledge with the community.
With qualifications in horticulture and social-ecology, Claire Hetzel has worked in disability, child and family services, education, and urban agriculture, supporting people of all ages and abilities to engage with nature and contribute to their communities.
She hopes the leadership program furthers her capacity to strengthen our social-ecological fabric.
Kim Day works towards developing novel psychedelic therapies as recognised medical treatments at the Psychae Institute.
She hopes the leadership program will provide her with the knowledge, skills and community required to tackle the immense challenges we face from a place of creativity, connection and authenticity.
Other support for environmental initiatives
Alongside these scholarships, Merri-bek has other opportunities to celebrate and support the environmental work of our community.
Nominations are now open for the annual Merri-bek Awards’ Environmental Sustainability Achievement award.
The Community Grants Program funds groups, organisations and individuals to implement initiatives – including environmental – that benefit the Merri-bek community.
