Selvatica is a coffee roastery and indoor plant nursery near Bunnings Coburg at 54 Gaffney Street, Coburg North. Family owned and operated by Chris, Mauro and Sebastian, the team is committed to running an environmentally friendly local business. Alongside minimising energy use, packaging and waste, Selvatica installed solar shortly after opening in 2019.

“I’d run hospitality businesses in the past and a lot of profit goes straight into electricity bills,” says Chris. “We wanted a new business that trades during the day with solar panels so that we can use the solar as we create it.”

Saving money in business

She found that the owner of the building was more than happy for them to install the solar system and upgrade their building. “It was not a difficult conversation”.

Chris and the team installed a 10kW solar PV system with help from Solar Victoria’s Solar for Business rebate. The rebate offers eligible businesses $3,500 to install a solar panel system, with the option of an interest-free loan up to $5,000.

Within the first four months of installation electricity bills had plummeted to about $150, says Chris.
