Wear & Care
RMIT PlaceLab Brunswick, Shop 1 17 Union Street, Brunswick VIC Australia
Tuesday 02 May, 4:30pm - 6:30pm
Wear & Care is an exploration into methods of fashion “rewilding” in Brunswick. Gathering locals, retailers, and researchers to learn about and encourage practices that mend, repair and share clothing to build a local response towards a new fashion system.
You’re invited to join us for a hands-on mending session to launch the RMIT PlaceLab ‘Wear & Care’ Community Repair Series.
Bring along your clean clothing in need of mending or alteration on Tuesday 2nd May 2023 at 4:30pm AEST. The location is RMIT PlaceLab Brunswick (Shop 1, 17 Union St, Brunswick). We’ll share hand repair techniques with you, ranging from inconspicuous to decorative, functional to expressive. Sewing supplies are provided and all levels from novice to experienced are welcome.
We’ll display examples of creative and visible mending as part of the session to encourage solutions that capture the creativity of fashion practice. You can also choose to have your repairs documented by the Repair Café at RMIT, as part of research into garment longevity and durability.
This event is the first of six pop-up community repair sessions held weekly.
Each week will focus on a different aspect of clothes mending, alterations and embellishment. The series is part of the Wear & Care Research Project by RMIT PlaceLab Brunswick in collaboration with RMIT School of Fashion & Textiles. You’re welcome to attend any or all of the sessions.
If you’re curious about rewilding in fashion, garment mending or community repair, we’d love for you to join us!
