What an inspiring day at the Environment Day Event for Multicultural Communities celebration held in Fawkner on Saturday 13 June!
With more than 300 community members attending, 29 stallholders representing local organisations and Council services, and a free children’s workshop focused on the re-using old clothes, the event created a vibrant space for learning, connection, and action around sustainability.
The success of the event was reflected not only in the strong attendance, but also in the positive outcomes reported by participants:
- 72% of attendees said they learned something new about sustainability.
- 86% feel more motivated to make sustainable choices after attending the event.
- 100% of attendees said they felt more connected to their local Council.
What made this event particularly special was its intersectional approach to environmental sustainability. Attendees heard from faith leaders who shared perspectives on caring for the environment through both Islamic and Christian teachings, highlighting the important role that faith communities play in advancing sustainable practices.
The event also featured a thought-provoking panel discussion on youth leadership in climate action and sustainability. We were privileged to hear from four young panellists from the Fawkner Future Group, who shared how young people are driving local climate action and creating positive change within their communities.
Throughout the day, meaningful conversations took place around climate action, connecting with Nature, environmental responsibility, and practical sustainability initiatives. The event also celebrated local environmental champions from multicultural communities, recognising the diverse voices and leadership that are helping shape a more sustainable future.
This impactful event was co-designed by our dedicated multicultural volunteers from the Inclusive and Sustainable Working Group. Their collaboration demonstrated the power of community-led approaches in creating inclusive and impactful environmental initiatives.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, contributed, volunteered, and helped make the day such a success. Collectively, we are building stronger, more connected, and more sustainable communities.
