The Ride & Stride program is a behaviour change program designed to get more kids riding, striding and scooting to school in Merri-bek.
As part of our Zero Carbon Merri-bek Strategy, we are committed to seeing 80% of all Merri-bek students travelling sustainably to school by 2030.
Apply for 2022
Merri-bek City Council are offering three local primary schools the opportunity to take part in Round 2 of our Ride & Stride program.
The schools selected for this year’s Ride & Stride program will work with council to deliver a variety of initiatives (valued up to $15,000) to encourage kids walking, riding and scooting to and from the school gates.
Programs on offer range from gamified active travel technology ‘TagOn’, e-cargo bike hire scheme, Open Streets trials, cycle skills and other initiatives tailored to each school.

School commitment
Award of the program will be determined on the basis of each school’s ability to commit to the following:
1. Commitment of a designated Ride & Stride Champion/s – at least one staff member who leads school participation with the program, with communication and stakeholder skills in engaging with the school council, SRC, parents and the wider school community.
2. Commitment to encouraging active, sustainable travel to school, demonstrated through participation in active/safe travel initiatives or wider sustainability programs/events.
3. Commitment of one half-day admin support initially to set up the ‘TagOn’ technology
4. Commitment to parent, student and staff representation in forming a small Ride & Stride committee over the course of the program; to tailor, monitor and evaluate projects with council and support a culture of active travel at the school following completion of council’s involvement.
5. Commitment to regular and timely data collection on various active travel behaviour change measures, such as active travel counts and online surveys with students/parents through compass or other school communications platforms.
6. Participation in the proposed suite of active travel programs between Term 2 – Term 4 2022
7. Commitment to promote activities and programs internally and externally, through school socials, newsletters and networks.
8. Commitment to meet with Council’s Sustainable Communities Officer regularly for ongoing program management.
Note: Schools are highly encouraged to nominate more than one R&S champion to ensure the program has wider impact internally and champions can share program responsibilities – e.g., this may be the PE teacher partnered with the school business lead, or the school well-being coordinator partnered with an early years teacher. Schools are expected to commit approximately one hour per week to the program. Council can commit $2,000 to cover time release for each nominated staff member/s across the year as needed for additional training purposes.
