Our community goals for 2025 are:
1. A significant decrease in the proportion of Merri-bek residents driving to work.
2. A higher than average (Melbourne metropolitan) ownership of electric vehicles.
WHAT CAN I DO?
Riding, walking or catching public transport keeps us healthy, creates more vibrant local streets and helps us all move towards a zero carbon future. For those journeys we need to make by car, Merri-bek has a great network of public electric vehicle charging stations which are 100% renewably powered and free to use.
RIDE & STRIDE SCHOOLS
Ride & Stride is a schools behaviour change program designed to get more kids riding, striding and scooting in Merri-bek.
WALKING & RIDING IN MERRI-BEK
Join the movement to make Merri-bek more vibrant, accessible and sustainable.
MOVE WITH ELECTRIC TRANSPORT
If active or public transport options are not practical for your journey, electric transport powered by renewable energy is the next best low emissions option.
GET YOUR WORKPLACE OR SCHOOL WALKING OR RIDING MORE
We often travel to our workplace or school every day, which makes them great places to introduce sustainable transport initiatives.
JOIN A CAR SHARE PROGRAM
Choosing car share membership as an alternative to car ownership gives you access to a car when you really need it. It also provides a nudge to use a more sustainable travel option all other times.
CATCH PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Trains, trams and buses get you across Melbourne and to major shopping areas like Brunswick, Coburg and Glenroy.

CERES Bike Shed
The CERES Bike Shed promotes cycling in our local community by recycling and selling bikes and their parts. They also teach residents bicycle repair skills.
Dr Cranky’s
Volunteer at your local school to find and fix up old bikes so the school can give them to children who may not be able to access or afford bikes otherwise.

Sustainable Cities is a collective of Friends of the Earth Melbourne in partnership with the Public Transport Users Association advocating for a more liveable connected Melbourne.
