Schools throughout Merri-bek have been invited to take climate action through the CERES Energy Challenge.

Aiming to help schools save money, energy and encourage students to be more physically active, schools participating in the Challenge go in the running for a Renewable Energy Feasibility Study worth $3000 and a CERES Virtual Excursion worth $165.

1,2,3 Energy Challenge

Schools can be involved in the simple three-step Energy Challenge by:

1) assessing and adjusting room temperatures;
2) encouraging active travel, such as participating in Ride2School Day on Friday 19 March 2021; and
3) switching some or all of their power to GreenPower.

Take the Challenge now by filling out the form or email teacherprograms@ceres.org.au for more information. Winners will be announced on Monday 10 May.

Benefits for the school and broader community

Delivered by CERES School of Energy & Climate, the Energy Challenge is designed to engage schools in actions that benefit their school community and beyond.

“The campaign has three challenges that can easily be undertaken by schools yet the benefits have high impact,” explains Jane Burns, CERES School Programs and Consultancy Director.

“Schools will save money by reducing energy use, engage in active travel with benefits to health, learning and air quality, and switch to clean energy – playing an important role in Victoria’s transition beyond coal and to net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.”

Schools already taking action

Eighteen schools throughout Merri-bek are already involved in taking climate action, including Oak Park Primary School, Brunswick Secondary College and Merri-bek Primary School where installation of a solar system has saved 39.86 tons of CO2 in almost two years.

Keep up the great work Merri-bek schools by taking the Energy Challenge by Friday April 30!
