On 7 November 2020, Zali Steggall, Independent Federal MP for Warringah, tabled the Climate Change (National Framework for Adaptation and Mitigation) Bill 2020 otherwise known as the proposed Climate Change Act.

What is the Climate Change Act?

The Climate Change Act is a proposed law to ensure the long-term safety, security and prosperity of Australia by achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The Act would ensure Australia has a clear and positive national response to the challenges of climate change.

The Act lays out fair, transparent and science-based plans to address the impacts of climate change, prevent worsening damage as a result of past carbon emissions and take advantage of economic opportunities.

The Climate Change Act will require Australia to have:

  1. A Net Zero target by 2050
  2. National Adaptation Plans and National Risk Assessments
  3. A Technology Readiness Assessment
  4. An independent advisory commission

To date, over 93 500 individual Australians have added their name to the call for its adoption. Additionally, over 100 Australian businesses, industry groups and community organisations have endorsed the proposed Act as a critical step in the recovery from the pandemic.

Local government support of the Act

Over a third of the largest local governments have committed to reaching zero community emissions by or before 2050. To achieve Moreland’s vision of a Zero Carbon Merri-bek by 2040 we need to use our voice to ensure State and Federal Governments make the right decisions so that we can transition to zero carbon at emergency speed.

We will be working with our local government partners to make a submission and support the Act.
