Growing Farmers is a community project based in Merri-bek. They aim to develop regenerative farming capacity in urban communities and to support a new generation of aspiring urban farmers.
Starting in January 2020 as a group of residents concerned about the current climate and environmental crises, they formed Growing Farmers to build a stronger, more resilient local food system that is better for the environment and for our community. They do this by assisting aspiring farmers with land, mentoring, networks and business coaching, all while building stronger community connections and providing fresh produce to our local community – a win-win outcome for everyone!
Connecting backyards with urban farmers
The Backyard Farmers Project matches aspiring urban farmers and volunteers with people who wish to maintain the productivity of their gardens, whilst fostering meaningful social connections. Three farmer / land host partnerships in Fawkner have been established under the program to date with more to come.
Farmers are supported with farming and business mentoring and access to sell their produce via the Fawkner Commons food hub.
Land hosts receive a weekly produce box and regular connection with their dedicated farmer and volunteers. The project aims to increase the access to and visibility of fresh food and backyard gardening in our area of Merri-bek while building ongoing, meaningful connections between our community.
