Victoria’s rapid population growth over the last ten years has brought numerous challenges for both infrastructure and communities.  While the COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily halted this growth, the State and Federal Governments, local councils, businesses and the community will continue to face other events such as climate change, technological disruptions, demographic shifts, economic dislocations and emergencies.

In order to face these challenges, Infrastructure Victoria is seeking feedback on a draft 30-year infrastructure strategy to help Victoria address existing pressures and prepare for the future.

You can watch this short video to learn more about the development of the strategy.

Clean energy, sustainable transport and reducing waste are front and centre

The draft strategy outlines key energy, transport, water and urban planning goals that are now open for public comment. Many of these recommendations directly align with Moreland’s Zero Carbon 2040 Framework and our actions to reduce our emissions.

Some of the most relevant recommendations for Merri-bek residents include:

  • Removing mandatory gas requirements in new home builds
  • New homes to have an 8-star energy rating by 2025
  • Investment in the electricity grid to handle increased renewable energy
  • Increase the number of separated bike lanes
  • Lower fares for trams and buses
  • Aim to phase out petrol/gas vehicles and adopt zero emissions vehicles
  • Upping capacity for inner Melbourne tram routes
  • Linking and expanding open space
  • Improve recycling facilities and fund waste reduction programs
  • Expanding affordable and social housing offerings

The draft strategy includes ways the Government is committed to navigating our energy transition to renewables, building a circular economy, and responding to a changing climate.
